March 19th, 2008 — Darvaza, Soviet, Turkmenistan, apocalypse
I’m really really enjoying the Fogonozos blog. The latest post is about an incredible pit of fire located in the middle of nowhere out in the desert of Turkmenistan.
The amazing thing about it, is that the fire isn’t caused by any of the usual natural reasons. The entire thing is actually the result of a mistake made by Soviet engineers who were drilling for natural gas in the 50s. The crater is now 60 meters in diameter and has been burning steadily since the initial ignition.

December 20th, 2007 — Christmas, Postcard, Russia, Soviet
Well, it’s nearly Christmas. So I thought I should do a Christmas themed post. So imagine my excitement when I found this site.
The makers of Mazaika, a photo mosaic tool, have amassed an amazing collection of vintage Soviet Christmas cards. Some of these are really interesting. And for some reason, a lot of them are space themed.

I only posted a few of them here, but there are lots more. So check out the site.

Found this great Flickr set of an abandoned Soviet missile silo in Latvia. With the recent news about US missile silos for sale, I thought this was a bit interesting.
