Russian Sub Dredged up from the deep

K-141 Kursk
K-141 Kursk was a Russian nuclear cruise missile submarine which sank in the Barents Sea back in 2000. it was just recently raised from the bottom by a Dutch salvage company.
The reason I’m posting about it here, is that the pictures of the sub are really creepy looking. Almost like something you would find in a horror movie or in a scifi movie like Alien.

Patriotic images made of people

American Eagle

Found a great gallery of patriotic pictures taken with early cameras. The pictures are of national symbols, like the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and various US military badges. All of the images in the photos were made up of service men and women at the start of World War 1. The formations and photographs were done by artists Arthur Mole and John Thomas. Who donated all proceeds from the sale of the photographs to the families of slain soldiers.

Painted Photographs

Sailor children
Square America, a site devoted to collecting vintage snapshots, has a very interesting gallery of snapshots that have been colored. Basically they have been partially painted to enhance a particular feature of the photograph.

Some of the images are really incredible. Adding color to the old pictures really makes them stand out.

A photo site of pictures you aren’t supposed to take

No Photography
I think this is great! How many times have you been in a location and you’ve seen a sign that says you can’t take photos? Usually I look around and just wonder why? Why don’t they want me to take photos here? What makes this place so special, or the stuff in it so secret, that I’m allowed to look but not take photos?

Well, I found a site that is devoted to nothing but pictures taken in places where photography is banned. Everything from museums to government buildings. And if you want to contribute, you can create your own account and start posting clandestine photos of forbidden places yourself.

Check it out: StrictlyNoPhotography.com
By the way, the picture in this post came from the site. The irony of a photo of a sign banning photography is just hilarious. LOL

Snow Crystals under extreme magnification

Snowflake closeup 1

We all know about the amazingly detailed shapes that snow crystals can take. We learned all about the pretty star shapes in school. But what if you were to put snow under an electron microscope? How detailed and varied would the snowflakes look?

Well, scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville Maryland did just that. And the results are amazing. The pictures don’t even look like snowflakes for the most part. Instead they look like giant gears and components of machines. Pretty amazing looking.

Light drawing

Light drawing
Using long exposures and light sources ranging from sparklers to Christmas lights, Eric Staller has created light drawings in photographs. The coolest thing is that these were all done using ordinary film back in the 70s. No computer enhancement or modifications required.

Ordinary guys send a camera into space

A group of guys in Alberta, Canada sent a balloon 22.27 miles up. Right to the edge of space. The balloon had a Nikon Coolpix P2 camera attached. The camera was set to take one picture a minute. Once the balloon reached the edge of the atmosphere, it burst. Coming down to a soft landing due to an attached parachute. The pictures they were able to take are amazing.

It seems like lately Canada is the place to be if you are interested in fun space projects. First we had the skydive from space, and now the balloon project.

3D chalk drawings

Julian Chalk art coke bottle

I discovered this amazing artist, Julian Beever, who does 3d sidewalk paintings in chalk. His pictures look so real that you almost believe they are real. The coolest thing is that since the images are meant to appear in 3d, they are actually painted in a distorted way. So when looking at them from the side or the back they are completely distorted a strange looking, but when looking at them from the front they come out in full 3d. The picture above is just one of many on his site. Check it out to see some truly amazing images.

The Age project

Found a very interesting site called the age project. basically, you can cycle through photos of people and try to guess their ages. Once you make a guess, the site tells you the persons real age, and the average guesses of visitors. It also shows you a one line quote from the person who’s photo you are looking at. Sounds pretty simple and not all that much fun, but in actuality it is pretty interesting. And if you want, you can even upload a photo of yourself for people to guess at.

Pictures of Soviet Bus stops

Soviet Russia was a very strange place. Some of the things the government did were odd and really tacky. One of those things were the bus stops. From big birds, to miniature pagodas. The bus stops are just plain weird.

Polar Inertia has a bunch of pictures of some of the more bizarre ones. Check it out: Soviet Roadside Bus Stops
