Chernobyl Legacy in pictures

Chernobyl fallout map
In 1986 reactor number 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. The resulting radioactive cloud settled over much of Eastern Europe. The extreme danger from the cloud, forced the evacuation of over 300,000 people. Today, over twenty years later, the countries most affected are still dealing with the aftermath.

Photographer Paul Fusco has created an amazing photo essay documenting the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in Belarus. According to official estimates, over 60% of the fallout landed in Belarus.
Check out the essay. The pictures are captivating. Chernobyl Legacy

Patriotic images made of people

American Eagle

Found a great gallery of patriotic pictures taken with early cameras. The pictures are of national symbols, like the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and various US military badges. All of the images in the photos were made up of service men and women at the start of World War 1. The formations and photographs were done by artists Arthur Mole and John Thomas. Who donated all proceeds from the sale of the photographs to the families of slain soldiers.

Painted Photographs

Sailor children
Square America, a site devoted to collecting vintage snapshots, has a very interesting gallery of snapshots that have been colored. Basically they have been partially painted to enhance a particular feature of the photograph.

Some of the images are really incredible. Adding color to the old pictures really makes them stand out.

A photo site of pictures you aren’t supposed to take

No Photography
I think this is great! How many times have you been in a location and you’ve seen a sign that says you can’t take photos? Usually I look around and just wonder why? Why don’t they want me to take photos here? What makes this place so special, or the stuff in it so secret, that I’m allowed to look but not take photos?

Well, I found a site that is devoted to nothing but pictures taken in places where photography is banned. Everything from museums to government buildings. And if you want to contribute, you can create your own account and start posting clandestine photos of forbidden places yourself.

Check it out: StrictlyNoPhotography.com
By the way, the picture in this post came from the site. The irony of a photo of a sign banning photography is just hilarious. LOL

License Plate collection

NCHANTD

License to Rant is a blog completely devoted to collecting custom license plates. The plates come from all over the US and say the strangest things. Everyone thinks it’s fun to get custom text on license plates, but since a license plate has limited room, sometimes people have to abbreviate. Which makes for some very interesting and funny statements.

Check out the site for all of the plates and the guesses on what they might mean.

Image Mosaic Generator

Jamie Mosaic Small
The above picture of me, was created using the Image Mosaic Generator. You can upload any image, and it will build a mosaic from flickr images using your image as a base. Pretty cool.

Once your image is complete, a link to download it is placed at the top of the page. Tools like this one really show the power of open platforms. Flickr has no functions like this. It is simply an image post site. But by opening up its API, cool niche applications like this can be built.
