Cave Worms in New Zealand

Glowworm
I’ve been reading Fogonazos a lot lately, and this post really caught my eye. The Waitomo Glowworm Cave in New Zealand is home to an amazing population of Glowworms.

The glowworms, Arachnocampa luminosa, are found exclusively in New Zealand and Australia. The worms spin nests out of silk on the ceiling of the cave and then hang down as many as 70 threads of silk from around each nest. Each thread is up to 30 or 40 cm long and holds tiny droplets of mucus. The worm glows to attract prey into its threads, trapping them much as a spider traps it’s prey.

There is an interesting photoset on Flicker of Fire dancers. Fire dancing, also known as fire spinning, involves twirling or spinning an object that is on fire in time to music or in elaborate patterns. The practice is common in many cultures throughout the world. Fire dancers us many different objects in their performances. Staves, batons, whips, even chains with balls attached, are all common tools used in the performance.

This particular photoset uses Poi, which are basically chains with balls of fire on the ends. The word poi means ball in the Maori language, and the practice of spinning balls on the ends of chains is said to have originated with the Maori tribes in New Zealand.Check out the entire set at Flickr: Fire Poi Dancing
