The Theremin Instrument

Leon Theremin Playing ThereminFound a really great video on Ted of Pamelia Kurstin playing a therimin.
Until I saw the video, I had never heard of a therimin. It a futuristic seeming instrument that is played without ever physically touching it. That’s right, you never actually touch the device. You play it entirely by moving your hands through the air.

Sounds pretty futuristic, right? Amazingly, this isn’t a new instrument. It was invented in 1919 by a Russian musician and inventor named, Léon Theremin. It was one of the earliest electronic instruments and was quite popular for a time. But fell out of use as more electronic instruments came on the scene.

The instrument has two antennas that adjust volume and pitch based on how far or close the players hands are to the antennas. So the musician literally moves his/her hands through the air in front of the instrument to produce the music. Watch the video below to see it in action.

What I’m Listening to: The Bird and the Bee - Polite Dance Song

Okay, I’ll admit the video is a little odd. To say the least. But I love the song. I found it on an indie music blog called , Audio Drums.
Since I found it, I’ve been listening to it almost nonstop. Something about the song just fits. The band consists of two artists, Greg Kurstin and Inara George.
Check out the band’s MySpace page for a sampling of their other music.

Ford Focus TV ad

A new TV ad for the Ford focus where all the music is played on instruments made from car parts. Not sure what that says about the car, but it’s cool either way.

What I’m listening to: Colin Munroe-I Want Those Flashing Lights

Watched this video yesterday and was totally hooked. The song is a remix of a Kanye West song by the same name.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the Kanye West version of the song, but I love this one. Colin Munroe has completely changed the feel of the song, and the video is great.
Check out his MySpace page.

An organ played by the rising tides

Sea Organ

On the shores of Zadar, Croatia there is a unique architectural installation. Nikola Basic and a team of master stone carvers built an organ that is played by the rising and falling tides.

What appear to be simple steps, actually have pipes tuned to provide music embedded inside. As the water rises, air is pushed through the pipes and produces music.

What I’m listening to: Kanye West Stronger

The truth is that I really don’t like Kanye West. His constant whining about not winning awards he thinks he should have gotten, and the general stupidity of his many political statements kind of turns me off. But no matter how much I don’t like him, I have to admit that he is a talented songwriter.

And his latest single is really catchy. Of course it helps that I already liked the Daft Punk song he is remixing. Groovy Dancing girl did her great dance interpretation of it. Which if you haven’t seen it, you really should check out.

Kanye West Graduation

Anyway, the Kanye West song is off his new album, Graduation. For sale right now at Amazon for $9.97.

What I’m listening to: FlyLeaf

This week I went back to a favorite from last year. Not exactly old, but not the latest release either. I really love the single, Fully Alive. In fact, I like pretty much the whole CD. It’s a little darker than some CDs I have, but not so dark that it is depressing. Its almost the exact opposite of the Matisyahu CD I was listening to just a few weeks ago. This group is one of those very rare metal groups with a female lead singer.

And if you want to buy the CD, its for sale on Amazon right now for $12.98.

What I’m listening to: Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight

I’m a huge fan of Linkin Park’s music, and lately I’ve been playing their new CD a lot.
I’ve got a 30 minute commute to work in the morning, so I get a lot of time with nothing much to do. Listening to music is about the only thing there is to do on that long boring commute. So I go through a lot of music, and am always listening to something different. Right now it just happens to be Linkin Park.

So anyway, here is their latest hit.

And if you want to buy the CD, its for sale on Amazon right now for $11.99.

What I’m listening to: Matisyahu - Youth

Lately, I’ve been listening to Matisyahu quite a bit. His music is a little different, and he doesn’t fit any particular genre. Most of the music world can’t quite decide what to classify him as. Because of that, you probably won’t hear his music on any terrestrial radio stations. I would classify his music as reggae, with a little rap thrown in.
Despite not being played on the radio much, he is getting a lot of recognition in the music world for the quality of his performances, and the lyrics of his music. His songs are really amazing. Watch the music video of Jerusalem below to see what I mean.
