I’m really really enjoying the Fogonozos blog. The latest post is about an incredible pit of fire located in the middle of nowhere out in the desert of Turkmenistan.
The amazing thing about it, is that the fire isn’t caused by any of the usual natural reasons. The entire thing is actually the result of a mistake made by Soviet engineers who were drilling for natural gas in the 50s. The crater is now 60 meters in diameter and has been burning steadily since the initial ignition.
The “Big Dog” is a really cool robot developed by Boston Dynamics. It can carry over 340 lbs and can navigate over nearly any type of terrain. The video is really cool. Watch for the spot where it nearly falls on ice. And the spot where the demonstrator kicks it to show how it recovers from an attack. The robot almost looks like an animal rather than a machine.
DeputyDog has a great post about huge and amazing gatherings of people. The picture above is from the Maha Kumbh Mela Hindu pilgrimage. An event that happens only once every twelve years. Millions of people congregate on the ganges river for the religious festival.
There is a belief that bathing in the river during the festival will wash away past sins and promote healing. Pilgrims travel from all over the world to attend the festival. The last festival, held in 2001 had over 70 million attendees.
I found a great collection of pictures like the one above. All of people “holding” the sun. Makes me wish I had a high quality camera. I might try to take a few pics like that myself. I know the sunrise over the bay outside of my house is often just amazing.
Who would have thought that you could have an entire blog devoted to the FAIL meme? But there is, and I find myself checking it regularly. Makes me wish I had thought of it first.
Sorry about the slow updates this week. I’ve been very busy transitioning out of my current job and haven’t had a lot of free time.
I’ll try to get more posts out the rest of this week to make up for it.
