Christmas from the Soviets

Santa on a jetWell, it’s nearly Christmas. So I thought I should do a Christmas themed post. So imagine my excitement when I found this site.

The makers of Mazaika, a photo mosaic tool, have amassed an amazing collection of vintage Soviet Christmas cards. Some of these are really interesting. And for some reason, a lot of them are space themed.

I only posted a few of them here, but there are lots more. So check out the site.

The USSR were very proud that they had sent the ever first satellite (Sputnik, 1957), the first animal (dog “Laika”, 1957) and the first man in space (Juri Gagarin, 1961).

And they’d sent the first space missile on the moon (Lunik 2, 1959).

BTW: the middle card in the triple block in your post brought me to perceive that the USSR also had the first space station in the orbit (Saljut 1, 1971).
“CCCP” (Cyrillian for USSR) and “Saljut” is written on the station, the little cosmonaut is holding a poster with “New Success in Cosmos” written on it.
(The other words - seen on nearly all the cards - are meaning “Happy New Year”).
